My
name is Stephen Holding and I am currently living and working in
New York City. My main sources of inspiration are light, motion,
energy, mass, and the infinite interactions between them. I see
present conditions as a means to understand and explore future possibilities.
Some
of my influences include Science Fiction, Music of all kinds, Italian
Futurism, the Bauhaus, New Media Design, and Grafitti. I always
keep my mind open to new experiences and refuse to dismiss anything
I find (or that finds me) as a possible subject for interpretation
and exploration.
I like
to vary the methods and materials I use. These can include oil painting
and drawing techniques, enamel and aerosol paint, digital media,
photography, and collage. I also like to experiment with different
surfaces to achieve different contexts and effects; canvas (primed
and unprimed), wood panelling, rusty sheet metal, concrete walls,
monitor screens, etc...
I see
these creative possibilities as elements used to solidify more solid,
intricate visual compositions. It is the search for this kind of visual/
psychological reaction that not only gives me the energy necessary
to keep my creative engine running but pushes me forward into new creative areas in the process.
